Harlem has a lot of contrasts - the history of this area is very rich with art and culture, but at one point was also marred by high crime and drugs. There are very expensive houses, and at the same time, homeless men (see previous picture) living on the streets.... this was another contrast I saw - the person who lives in the apartment above obviously cares about how they live, and have taken the time to decorate their window, while the person that decided to deface the shop door downstairs didn't care too much...

On this note, my series on Harlem ends. The discussion about capturing the 'soul' of a city started in Ilan Bresler's blog post has started to catch on, and its nice to see other people weigh in with their opinion. I had originally commented about the approach to take on a series that I learned in class, but as you can see on this blog (http://kenrathke.shutterchance.com), there are other methods. Ken has attempted to picture what the 'soul' of Chicago is by taking pictures of things he feels is the soul of the city, or what the city means to him. I think this is a great approach, because unlike people, I think cities can have different sides to them - as in more than one 'soul'. So it would be nice to see how Chicago looks to Ken, as opposed to someone else, or what the general tourist books describe as to what the soul of Chicago should be and thereby maybe showing Chicago as it has not been seen by anyone else... This is Country (street name), the man in this picure - The Bat Cave, one of many that live there. I met him during my walk in Harlem last week and he told me all about the history of the Bat Cave. He mentioned that the Bat Cave is one of the most coveted shooting locations for hollywood, and that he is the one to manage the place when the likes of Tom Cruise, Nicholas Cage and other famous hollywood actors and producers want to shoot their movies here. He also questioned me aggresively what I would be doing with the pictures, and after I mentioned that I'm really not a professional photographer and I don't plan on selling the pictures anywhere, he seemed to be more at ease. He also told me about another photographer who was doing a full fledged photojournalism piece about them (Andrea Star Reese) and the Bat Cave. He was really nice, and invited me to come back soon... hopefully I will make it back....[....]

I was walking under a bridge in Harlem, when I came across this small enclave, which looked interesting, so I crossed the street and started taking pictures. I saw a man sweeping the floor, and I thought odd that this man would be sweeping part of the street as if he was cleaning his own front yard. He saw me and started to speak to me from the other side. I eventually crossed the street and started to talk to him. This is the bat cave, affectionately named by the people who live there. It's a dead end block in Harlem where a bunch of homeless men make their home. He told me a lot of history about it, and how a lot of big hollywood movies are shot and how this was the best place to live in New York City. I don't think he trusted me enough to let me go in the back, but I was told the building has the other face to the river. I know its slightly naive, but I still find myself a little bit surprised to find homeless people in one of the most (if not THE most) powerful and rich country in the world...[....]

I'm not much of a street photographer; I'm a better people photographer, and more interested in photographing the human struggle, but my friend Francesco convinced me to take a walk around Harlem and discover a part of New York that is often ignored because of a lot a preconceived notions. Well - to clear up any of those thoughts, forget what you see in the movies. And then, walk. You'll be mesmerized by the energy of the place and the vibrancy of the people.

Recently, Francesco and I had a conversation with Ilan about capturing the 'essence' of a city - he was struggling with the fact that on his trip to Barcelona, he felt he failed to capture the 'soul' of the city. I've lived in New York for over 12 years now, and even though I feel the place, I don't think I've captured the essence of the city, really in any of my pictures. To make a long story short, I think one needs to go a to place a LOT of times, in order to get a real feel for the place - and when I say 'go' I mean experience the city. Going to Harlem was a really good experience, and I will have keep going back if I want to capture the soul of this place...

Another iconic New York City Landmark, also from the top of the Rockefeller Building. I've been MIA for a while but with a good excuse - I was in Spain :). Lots of pics from there to post, which I will do so in the next few weeks, but have to get through the massive amount of pictures I took.[....]

Only in New York, I guess - this guy was doing all sorts of stunts on this little rock in Central park, and the couple in the back were totally oblivious to the biker... as if he didn't even exist... not to mention that he was EXTREMELY close to them and could probably take off their heads....[....]

I've lived in New York for over 12 years, but I've never made it down to see any of the NYC staples, like the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty - I've passed Times Square many many times, but never stopped to look up at the building that makes that place look like daylight 24/7. In fact, if it wasn't for one of my friends, I would have never made to the top of the World Trade Center before 9/11 - he had forced me to go with him, and I obliged. Then when people visit, I'm shuffling through google and/or city guides to find information about all these places...Well - this summer, a lot of friends are scheduled to visit, so I've decided to take advantage of it and so this past weekend was one of my first stints as a tour guide in NYC :).... and this is one of the shots from the top of the rock, at the Rockefeller Building in New York City...I'm sure photographers far better than me has attempted this with more superior results.... but ya know, I had to do it - it's my city, too :)[....]

I don't particularly like fish. I don't like the smell, the taste, the texture and the way it's eyeballs look. But there is an aura of history and tradition around Fulton Fish Market that you just can't ignore...its very captivating.[....]

In South Street Seaport in New York City, they close off the last pier on certain days and put on music so couples can come and dance... most people dance the tango, and some people just dance. People dancing in the middle of the city chaos just stands out so loudly, you can't help but notice them - but they are totally in their world, not noticing you at all. Really - everybody else might as well not be there, including the Brooklyn Bridge in the background - all they need is the music....[....]
